Perioperative indications for pacemaker placement:

  1. any documented symptomatic bradyarrythmia
  2. a new bundle branch block
  3. a second degree type II aV block
  4. a third degree AV block associated with MI
  5. a bifascicular block in a comatose patient (controversial)
  6. refractory supraventricular tachyarrhythmias

Indications 1-5 generally require ventricular pacing. Refractory supraventricular tachyarrhythmias will require atrial pacing electrodes and a programmable rapid atrial pulse generator.
