IABP: Contraindications

An intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is a device used to decrease myocardial oxygen demand and increased oxygen supply to the heart. The balloon inflates during diastole, promoting blood flow through the coronary arteries, and deflates during systole allowing forward flow into the systemic circulation.

Contraindications to the placement of an IABP include the following:

  • moderate to severe aortic insufficiency
  • inability to place the device i.e. peripheral vascular disease
  • aortic aneurysm or dissection
  • sepsis or bleeding diathesis
  • patient refusal
