ANOVA test is used to compare the means (average) +/- SD for more than two groups (normally distributed).
If only two groups then can use a t-test. Paired t-test takes multiple measures and compares the differences. In this test each subject serves as their own control. Used w/ ladder plots, usually in crossover studies.
If not normally distributed then use Mann-Whitney test.
